Biology – 1st degree studies

Description of major:

Studies in the field of biology are addressed to individuals interested in conditions of the functioning of the biosphere understood in a broad manner. In the course of studies issues including those related to zoology and botany; the morphology, anatomy and physiology of all groups of animals and plants are introduced. Students become familiarized with microbiology, molecular biology and genetics, embryology and histology, evolution and ecology on an advanced level. The aforementioned issues are presented based on the results of the latest research and scientific experience of the employees of the Faculty of Biology and Zootechnics.

Employment opportunities:

What can biology graduates do when it comes to their professional life?

Thanks to their well-established knowledge in the field of biological sciences, the biology graduates are fully prepared to realise tasks concerning the following fields: biological analyzes using laboratory and microscopic techniques; hydrobiological and ecotoxicological analyzes, monitoring the condition of natural environments and the protection of such environment. Students of biology obtain education concerning, among others, methods and techniques connected to laboratory work, establishment of databases and processing information devoted to the functioning of biocenoses and ecosystems, methods of population quantitative and qualitative research.

Which areas/industries do biology graduates work in?

Biology is a field of study offering advanced knowledge ranging from the disciplines of modern biological sciences. As a result, graduates of the course can find employment in all enterprises and institutions involved in all aspects of the functioning of the natural environment. One can find employment in administrative institutions, scientific units and foundations responsible for the protection of natural habitats and species protection. Moreover, such educational profile means one is able to work in zoos, botanical gardens and national parks as well as other field research units. Mastering the techniques of laboratory analysis provides employment opportunities as regards laboratories operating in the structures of scientific and research units and various enterprises as well as in biotechnology companies which deal with the transfer of new technologies. What is more, the character of general biology education means one can be employed in primary and secondary education after completing pedagogical courses.

Biology - 2nd degree studies

Description of major:

Studies in the field of biology are addressed to individuals interested in deepening their knowledge concerning environmental biology and advanced laboratory techniques applied in biological sciences. In the course of studies, one becomes familiar with many issues, e.g. issues related to: phylogeny reconstruction techniques, bioinformatics, comparative genomics based on the results of the latest scientific research conducted by employees of the Faculty of Biology and Zootechnics. Students can obtain advanced knowledge concerning  biotechnology, cell and tissue culture techniques, behavioural ecology, biogeography, nature conservation and bioethics.

Employment opportunities:

What can biology graduates do when it comes to their professional life?

Graduates of the aforementioned course obtain complete preparation for the realisation of tasks in the following fields: biological analyzes using the techniques of phylogeny reconstruction; application of cell and tissue culture techniques and in vitro breeding, biotechnology of animal reproduction, realisation of procedures aimed at rational management of biological resources, monitoring of the natural environment and its protection thanks to the student’s extended knowledge in the field of biological sciences. Students of biology become familiarized, among other things, with the methods and techniques of laboratory analysis, analysis of environmental contamination, methods of bioindication and environmental monitoring.

Which areas/industries do biology graduates work in?

As the graduates are equipped with theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of laboratory research techniques in biology or environmental biology, they can find employment in companies and research units devoted to biotechnology, tissue engineering and bioinformatics as well as public institutions, enterprises and scientific research specialising in environmental monitoring and environmental protection. Moreover, the educational profile means such individuals can work in zoos, botanical gardens and national parks as well as in other field research units. The character of education means one can find employment in primary, secondary and higher education after completing pedagogical courses.
